Hoover Dam: A spectacular feat of engineering, the Hoover Dam is well worth a trip from Vegas — and you can get there in just 45 minutes. The dam is the highest concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere, and it towers over the Colorado River at more than 720 feet tall. Not only that, but it was also named one of the Top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th Century. You can take a tour of the power plant for a small fee, and see the original diversion tunnels and the generators at the base of the dam — before visiting the observation deck where you can take in the panoramic views over the Colorado River and Lake Mead.
Red Rock Canyon: Less than half an hour from Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon is an area of astounding natural beauty. Home to thousands of different species of plants and wildlife (including lizards, grey foxes, and burros) the park is a great place to visit if you enjoy outdoor pursuits — with activities like hiking, biking, and climbing on offer. If you want to take in the stunning sights from behind the wheel, enjoy the one-way scenic drive (around 13 miles long) before heading back to Las Vegas.
Bonnie Springs Ranch: Situated in the Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area, Bonnie Springs Ranch is a great day out for the whole family. The ranch is a replica of a traditional mining town, where you can take part of a number of fun activities — including horse riding, pony trekking, and rock climbing. There is also a small petting zoo, where youngsters can get up close with native and exotic animals (such as alpacas, goats, and deer).
