Obertauern: Want to hit the slopes while you’re in Salzburg? Then jump in the car and make your way to Obertauern. Just over 100km from the city, this ski resort was once frequented by the Beatles. The ski area has modern lifts and runs that will suit all abilities. There is also plenty of opportunity to go off-piste. In summer there are some great hiking and biking trails.
Salzkammergut: Known as the ‘Lake District of Austria’, the Salzkammergut area is a popular destination — especially in summer. Don’t miss Fuschl am See, a photogenic village next to Lake Fuschlsee which is a good base for hiking and visiting St. Gilgen (home to a famous cog railway, Baroque architecture and a Christmas market).
Hohenwerfen Fortress: Situated 45 minutes from Salzburg by car, the Hohenwerfen Fortress has towered over the Salzachtal Valley for over 900 years. You can discover the history of this castle by taking a tour that will include the chapel, kitchens, the armoury and the bell tower. Hohenwerfen is open all year round, and features regular events such as falconry displays and seasonal markets.
