Chichén Itzá: A 2-hour drive from Cancun, the Chichén Itzá is one of the most important examples of Mayan architecture — and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The most famous construction at the site is El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulcan: this magnificent step pyramid stands at 24 metres high. If you visit at 3pm between March 20th and September 21st, you will see a fascinating phenomenon where the sunlight causes seven isosceles triangles to form — imitating the body of a serpent slithering down the steps until it joins the carved serpent’s head at the bottom.
Xcaret Park: A great place for the whole family, Xcaret Park is an ecological park where you will find a wealth of activities and attractions for all ages. Whether you want to swim with sharks, interact with a dolphin, walk through a traditional Mayan village or enjoy a scenic boat ride through the jungle, Xcaret has plenty to keep you occupied — and it’s just over an hour’s drive from Cancun.
Playa del Carmen: A great destination for shopping and dining, Playa del Carmen makes a great day trip from Cancun. The resort can be reached in an hour, so spend the morning sunbathing on a beautiful white-sand beach, then explore the vibrant town centre and grab a bite to eat in one of the many restaurants.
