Bonn: As the birthplace of composer Ludwig van Beethoven, Bonn is a must-see city while visiting Cologne. A 40-minute drive from Cologne, Bonn became the temporary capital of West Germany in 1949, and is the home of the United Nations. If you are a fan of classical music, make sure you visit Beethoven-Haus and the Beethoven monument.
Aachen and the Lindt Chocolate Factory Outlet: Located an hour’s drive from Cologne is Aachen, home to the Lindt Chocolate Factory Outlet. The massive store is filled with all things Lindt, and the prices are great too. Aachen itself is a picturesque spa town, home to an ornate cathedral which is the oldest in Northern Europe.
KÖLNPFAD Hiking Trail: Hiking is a national pass time in Germany, and Cologne is often used as a base. The KÖLNPFAD Hiking Trail is 171 kilometres long, and is broken up into eleven stages. The trail is marked by a series of white circles on a black background — and takes you through parks, woodland, lakes and water meadows.
