Attica Zoological Park: Visiting with the kids? Take a trip to Attica Zoological Park, only a 40-minute drive from Athens city centre. With over 2,000 animals, you can come face to face with birds, monkeys, cheetahs, rhinos and camels. You can also enjoy the Marine Mammals Educational Programme, where you can learn more about dolphins and seals by helping the keepers feed them.
Cape Sounio: Cape Sounio, an 80-minute drive from Athens, is one of the most picturesque day trips from the capital. Dominating the cape are the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon. The temple is constructed from marble, and offers beautiful views of the coastline. The Temple of Poseidon was visited by poet Lord Byron.
Amphiareion of Oropos: Just 45 minutes north-east of Athens is Amphiareion of Oropos, an ancient sanctuary. Once a destination for pilgrims seeking cures, Amphiareion is now a site of pilgrimage for history lovers. You can explore the ruins of the temple dedicated to Amphiaraus, the old ‘healing’ baths, an amphitheatre and several dwellings. Enjoy a seafood lunch at one of the fish tavernas in the nearby town of Oropos.
