Top Tips

  • The cost of on-street parking in Edinburgh costs £1.20-£3.50 an hour depending on the street. There are a number of multi-storey car parks across the city as well.
  • Edinburgh has a lot of one-way streets, so you might want to request a GPS if you’re unfamiliar with the city. Or, you could bring your own if you want to keep costs to a minimum.
  • Don’t forget to consider how much luggage space you will need when booking your hire car.

Day trips from Edinburgh

St. Andrews: Known as the ‘home of golf’ St. Andrews is a picturesque town on the east coast of Fife — and a great day out for anyone who loves to hit the fairways! But, there’s more to St Andrew’s than golf: the town has numerous historic sites (including a castle and the ruins of the cathedral), several museums, a secret bunker and an aquarium. The university is also worth exploring too — it’s the third-oldest university in the English-speaking world, and the oldest in Scotland (it’s also where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge studied). St. Andrews is just an hour and 20 minutes from Edinburgh by car.

Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park: Brimming with breathtaking natural beauty, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park offers a relaxing, scenic day out. You can take a waterbus ride across the loch (which is the largest body of freshwater on the UK mainland), or take part in one of the water sports on offer (such as sailing, canoeing or water skiing). Land-based activities include horse riding, cycling and climbing — alternatively, you can simply enjoy a leisurely stroll and take in the spectacular scenery. It takes just under two hours to drive from Edinburgh to Loch Lomond.

Glasgow: Experience two Scottish cities during your trip and visit Glasgow, just over an hour’s drive from Edinburgh. Whether you want culture, excellent shopping opportunities or a great selection of restaurants, Glasgow has something for everyone. The city is rich in Victorian and Art Nouveau architecture, and is home to the Scottish Opera, the Scottish Ballet and the National Theatre of Scotland. With a science centre, botanic gardens and plenty of museums and art galleries, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to the range of attractions Glasgow has to offer.
