Why rent a car in Budapest with Rentalcars.com?

Come to Rentalcars.com next time you are looking for cheap car hire in Budapest, or at one of the other 43,000 locations worldwide. Our team negotiate with rental brands directly, bringing you exclusive prices — and if you do happen to find the same car from the same supplier cheaper elsewhere, we will beat the price.

When you search on our site for a car in Budapest, you will find a wide range of vehicles from international brands like Avis and Thrifty (as well as national firms such as Fox Autorent). We make hiring a car in Budapest simple and hassle-free by quickly comparing prices and providing all the information you need upfront.

Top Tips

  • If you drive on the motorways of Hungary and see a sign stating ‘MATRICA VIGNETTE’, you must buy a pass, which is available from petrol stations.
  • Parking can be difficult in central Budapest, so we recommend parking in the outskirts.
  • There is a zero-tolerance policy on drink-driving in the Hungarian capital. If you have been found to have drunk any amount of alcohol, you will be fined.

Which companies offer best value in Budapest?

If you are keen to save money, keep an eye out for cars which come with a special offer: some brands (Thrifty and Megadrive, for example) often include the winterisation fee in the rental price, or give you an additional driver at no extra cost. To get a good idea about which companies offer the best overall value for money, look at the ratings and reviews left by previous customers next to each listing. We show their feedback because we believe in being impartial.

Day trips from Budapest

Nagytétény Castle: Just half an hour away from the city centre is Nagytétény Castle. This lavish Baroque house was built in the 18th century on the footprint of a 15th-century palace. The castle now houses the Museum of Applied Arts. Highlights include the history of furniture art and the collection of Roman artefacts.

Pecs: Pecs is a picturesque town around 200km south of Budapest. Popular with tourists, this town has a mild climate and is brimming with museums, fine architecture and a medieval marketplace. Don’t miss the Cathedral of St Peter (which also served as a mosque during the Turkish occupation) and the courtyards and houses of the Old Town.

Esztergom: Located on the banks of the Danube, an hour north-west of Budapest is Esztergom. This easily accessible historic town is famous for the ruins of a 10th-century Hungarian Royal Palace. Also worth a visit is the Christen Museum, which houses a collection of works by Italian Renaissance artists. Close by are the Pilis Mountains, where there are caves, fossils and hiking trails.
