Car Hire Knowhow

What is a 'mini' car in car rental?

What is a 'mini' car in car rental?

‘Mini’ cars are the smallest types of cars you can hire. Minis are suitable for three or four people for very short trips. For longer trips, they’re more suitable for one or two people. Minis are often (but not necessarily) hatchbacks.

Rental companies change their fleet frequently, and they often don’t know precisely which cars will be available because some cars will need cleaning, servicing, repairing and replacing. This is why every rental car has ‘or similar’ next to the make and model you’re looking at. If you choose to rent a mini car the ‘or similar’ options will be other mini cars.

By the way, the car model called Mini, manufactured by BMW, is actually in the compact category. If you’re looking for a car larger than on in the mini group, the next group up is economy, and then the next up from economy is compact.

Helping you compare: mini cars

Here are some examples of mini cars. They have slightly different specifications and look different on the surface, but they all have similarly sized engines, dimensions and luggage and passenger space. So any one of these – as well as other mini cars not shown – could be provided when you book any car in the mini group.
