What is an 'economy' car in car rental?

What is an 'economy' car in car rental?

In car rental, economy cars tend to be small – they are the second smallest type of car you can rent. They are good for city driving and suitable for four people for shorter trips, and two or three people for longer trips.

Rental companies change their fleet frequently, and they often don’t know precisely which cars will be available because some cars will need cleaning, servicing, repairing and replacing. This is why every rental car has ‘or similar’ next to the make and model you’re looking at. If you choose to rent an economy car, the ‘or similar’ options will be other economy cars.

Economy cars are the next group up from ‘mini’ cars, and the next group down from ‘compact’ cars.

Helping you compare: economy cars

Here are some examples of economy cars. They have slightly different specifications and look different on the surface, but they all have similarly sized engines, dimensions and luggage and passenger space. So any one of these – as well as other economy cars not shown – could be provided when you book any car in the economy group.
